Severe thunderstorms on Thursday evening brought down trees and wires, causing some power outages and closing numerous roads, some of which remained closed Friday morning, which caused traffic detours and long delays.
In Princeton Township, the first calls were received by police at approximately 7:40 p.m. reporting wires and trees down blocking Cherry Valley Road between The Great Road and Province Line Road.
Two transformer fires were reported, one in the 300 block of State Road (Route 206 north) and the other at Route 206 and Hutchinson Road.
The roadway was closed in both instances and traffic was detoured onto adjacent roadways where possible.
Trees and wires were reported down on Mercer Street, Crestview Road, Dempsey Avenue, Riverside Drive, Terhune Road, Quaker Road and Cherry Hill Road.
As of Friday morning many township roadways remained closed to traffic due to power lines down, including Route 206, Mercer Street, Cherry Valley Road and Stuart Road.
In Princeton Borough, 10 to 12 trees came down.
A large tree that came down at Borough Hall fell on top of a parked car.
Montgomery police reported that Cherry Valley Road was still closed on Friday morning because of downed trees and wires.
Also a section of Opossum Road, between Red Fox Road and Orchard Road was closed.
There also were sporadic power outages due to downed trees in the areas most affected.
At one point on Thursday night, more than 500 PSE&G customers in Princeton were without electricity. However, most power had been restored by Friday morning.
In West Windsor, police reported a power outage in the east end of the town for a few hours on Thursday evening had been restored by midnight.
There were no road closures, but three traffic lights were out for a while and extra personnel were called in.
