EDITORIAL: Thumbs up to head of association

THUMBS UP and congratulations to Susan A. Feeney of Montgomery who has been appointed as president of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
It is only the seventh time in 113 years that a woman has headed the association.
Ms. Feeney takes over the leadership from Rick Steen, a Princeton attorney who says with confidence that she will do an “outstanding job”.
Her responsibilities during a one-year term will include working with county bar associations, serving as the spokesperson for the association and lobbying the judiciary, Legislature and governor’s office.
Her personal projects will be to foster diversity, encourage attorneys to do more pro bono service and mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a day of service.
She has already created of a task force to examine the justice gap and ways the legal community could address the needs of poor residents and the organizations that serve them.
A partner who specializes in tax matters at McCarter & English in Newark, Ms. Feeney has been a member of the state association for nearly 30 years.
She moved to Skillman 21 years ago with her husband and bought his share of the home when they divorced. “I just think it’s a beautiful place to live,” she says, noting she also enjoys its proximity to Princeton.
As for her duties as bar association president, she says, “I’m just really looking forward to the year.”
She has picked out some very worthwhile, and in the cases of diversity and pro bono work, much needed projects.
   We wish her success.
