PRINCETON: Firefighters recognized for their service

Hometown heroes had their moment to shine Friday night at the 127th annual Fire Inspection and Parade in downtown Princeton.
For some residents, it’s a lifelong passion as they were recognized for their years of selfless service to the community and getting up to answer some of the 837 fire calls last year.
Princeton Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman said thank you to the departments for their dedicated service.
”You should realize what you are doing makes a difference,” said Chief Dan Tomalin, as he addressed the assembled fire companies and thanked the Ladies Auxiliary and Princeton First Aid and Rescue for their continued support.
Sal Baldino received recognition for responding to the most calls, 249, of the 837 fire calls last year.
”What impressed me was when I first moved here and lived on Linden Lane, I lived next door to the Baldinos. It’s nice to see someone grow up and be part of the community,” said Township Mayor Chad Goerner. “I know over the last year, the fire department has gone through change and change is hard.”
William J. Toole of Princeton Hook and Ladder Fire Company was honored for his 60 years of service in the department.
   J. V. Skillman and John Clausen were recognized for their 55 years and 50 years of service to Engine Company 1. Mercer Engine 3 honored Harry J Wright for his 45 years of service. William D Shields celebrated 40 years with Engine Company 1 and Princeton Hook and Ladder Fire Company recognized Mike Miller for 25 years of service.
Bill Karch of Mercer Engine Company 3 and Henry Tamasi of Princeton Hook & Ladder Company, were recognized as fire company members who died since last year’s inspection.
Inspections were begun in July 1884 and are a tradition in the department that was started in 1788, making it one of America’s oldest volunteer departments.
The three fire companies, the Ladies Auxiliary and Princeton First Aid and Rescue all participated in a parade down Nassau Street. Bagpipe music was provided by the Pipes and Drums of the Atlantic Watch.
