John Salvetta, Lawrence High Class of 1998
To the editor:
As a graduate of Lawrence High and also as a teacher, I am deeply saddened and disgusted by the poor showing of staff support to the Class of 2011.
In the graduation program there were over 250 staff members listed, and seated in the front were no more than14 staff members.
As people who profess to ‘support’ their students, where were they on the one night that culminates all of their (both teachers and students) hard work in their classes? How can teachers demand respect from the public, their board, and their students when they don’t even show up at their students’ graduation?
I, too, work tirelessly to support my students and make sure they succeed, but the difference between myself and those that did not show, is that I do enjoy watching the final result of all my work. We are their leaders. We are their mentors. And for some students, we are there more than their parents. To not appear at the graduation and show your support is a sign of disrespect and lack of integrity in your work.
