HOPEWELL VALLEY: Grads going to colleges near and far

From Ivy League Princeton down the road, to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, nearly 260 of Hopewell Valley Central High School’s 288 seniors will head off to colleges and universities near and far this fall, according to Alicia Waltman, school district spokeswoman.
”CHS students plan to matriculate at more than 130 different institutions of higher learning. Among the most prestigious are Princeton, Cornell, Georgetown, Stanford, and the University of Chicago.
” Four students will go abroad; three are heading for McGill University in Montreal, Canada, while one student will attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Other colleges that will welcome Hopewell grads include the University of Virginia, Middlebury College in Vermont, Tufts University in Massachusetts, New York University, the University of California-Berkeley, Villanova, the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.,” she said.
”We’re extremely proud of the hard work our students have done at Central High School to prepare themselves for the college experience,” said Counseling Services Supervisor Christine Abrahams. “We’re also proud that they’ve been accepted to a range of excellent schools.”
College admissions remained competitive this year, said Ms. Abrahams.
”Our students are competing with other high performing districts in our state for seats at virtually the same colleges,” she said, noting that schools in the Northeast remain popular.
Some of the most popular colleges for HoVal’s class of 2011 include the University of Colorado at Boulder (five students attending); University of Pittsburgh (six); Northeastern University (six); Rutgers (seven); Penn State (seven); and Rider University (eight).
