Tom McCarthy, the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, is singing the praises of Lambertville’s Vic Walker Memorial All Star Baseball Tournament in a recently produced video.
The video, produced by Delaware Valley Video of Lambertville, explains the history of the tournament, and “why it has become the premier recreational youth baseball tournament in New Jersey,” said a spokesman.
During the late 1970s, the Lambertville Little League began considering the possibility of hosting a post-season baseball tournament for all-star teams representing area Little Leagues. After several years in the planning stages, the league finalized its preparations during the early part of 1981.
Now, 30 years later the tournament is still alive and going strong and draws teams from as far away as Philadelphia and North Jersey.
The tournament is put together under the direction of Lambertville West Amwell Youth Baseball Softball Association President Richard Roy.
Dates of games and the teams that will be involved have not been finalized, but in July baseball enthusiasts will get to see plenty of baseball under the lights at Eli Field, the spokesman said.
”Our tournament restores faith in what most leagues are looking for — some good old-fashioned baseball in a relaxed environment. Although the level of competition is high, this tournament puts the kids first while others focus on winning at all costs,” according to Mr. Roy. “We invite you to check out our promotional video.”

Mr. McCarthy is the play-by-play announcer for Philadelphia Phillies television broadcasts. He also is the play-by-play voice of Saint Joseph’s University’s basketball teams, according to a website.
He spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2001–2005) as a radio play-by-play voice and as their pregame and post-game radio host. He also has been a play-by-play voice for Rutgers University football and for national football and basketball telecasts on the CBS College Sports Network (formerly known as CSTV), Westwood One, and the Atlantic 10 TV network.
After two seasons as a play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets on WFAN, Mr. McCarthy signed a five-year deal to return to Philadelphia. Following the death of the beloved Harry Kalas, he took over television play-by-play on a full-time basis and is one of three broadcasters to have covered both the Mets and Phillies on a regular basis. The others are Tim McCarver and Todd Kalas.
Mr. McCarthy also spent nearly a decade broadcasting Princeton University football and men’s basketball. He was the play-by-play voice for the Tigers during their 43-41 upset win over defending NCAA champion UCLA in the 1996 NCAA tournament and during their 27-2 run through the 1997-98 season.
