WEST AMWELL — West Amwell Elementary School has a new principal, Deborah L. Sarmir, who has served as a teacher in the gifted and talented math program for Clinton Public Schools.
Mrs. Sarmir spent the day at West Amwell Elementary June 15 and stayed around for sixth-grade promotion that evening.
School officials are planning a reception at the end of August for those who want to meet Mrs. Sarmir. The date will be announced.
The West Amwell Elementary School Board of Education reviewed over 70 applications and completed many interviews prior to picking the new principal.
”Our staff also played a part in the interview process,” according to the school’s website.
”We believe Mrs. Sarmir is a perfect fit for West Amwell Elementary,” a spokesman said.
”We chose Mrs. Sarmir based on her comprehensive teaching and leadership experience. Through the interview process it was clear that Mrs. Sarmir excelled in organizational, interpersonal, leadership and creative problem-solving skills. She is dedicated to improving the learning experience of elementary and middle school students, which is important in our mission to strengthen the continuity of our upper grades as they move toward the middle school level,” the spokesman added.
Mrs. Sarmir has 18 years experience in education, out of which 17 have been spent teaching in the Clinton system. She has experience teaching various grade levels and also led various programs, such as: Administrative Council Team leader, innovative program development, communication liaison and grant writing programs.
Her teaching experience includes: first-fourth grades classroom teacher, sixth-grade language arts, third- and fourth-grade multi-age programs in science and math, and gifted and talented math for grades three-seven.
Mrs. Sarmir, who was hired June 8, replaces Lynne Meara, who is retiring. She came to West Amwell in 2008, after two years as principal in an East Brunswick elementary school and more than 20 years in the Plumsted Township district.
