WEST WINDSOR: Morgan pushing for sign rules to aid small businesses

By Allison Musante, Staff Writer
WEST WINDSOR — Councilman Charles Morgan has begun drafting a sign ordinance to help smaller businesses in town attract more customers. The ordinance will be on the table for introduction at the council’s meeting on Monday.
Mr. Morgan proposes signs designating a real estate development, open house or similar sales activity shall be permitted on public rights-of-way adjacent to private property between noon and 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays only.
Signs shall be permitted on public rights-of-way adjacent to the place of business during its normal operating hours. Such signs shall not exceed six square feet and no side shall exceed three feet. The signs shall not be fastened to any utility pole or traffic control or street signs.
Council members wanted to impose greater limitations on the ordinance, concerned that it would be “carte blanche” for the proliferation of signs.
Township attorney Michael Herbert will draft the ordinance with revisions.
