HILLSBOROUGH: Girl Scouts work for foster dogs

Junior Girl Scout Troop 1224 from Auten Road School has been working with Hillsborough’s local Shelter Survivors, who give foster homes to dogs in need of adoption.
Shelter Survivors rescues dogs that have been turned over to high-kill shelters in the tri-state area. Many of these dogs have wonderful temperaments, yet they face the risk of euthanasia simply due to overcrowding in shelters, said Shawna Newsom of the group.
Dogs live in foster homes until they find their permanent homes. The time as foster pets allows them to integrate into homes so that rescuers can have a better understanding of who they are, which enhances the chances of matching a family to a dog so a home really is forever, said Ms. Newsom.

The Girl Scouts have been volunteering 15 hours each to earn their Bronze Award. They have collected donations at Stop ‘n Shop, made homemade dog treats and toys, visited the Staten Island shelter that Shelter Survivors takes dogs from and worked at pet adoption events along with Shelter Survivors volunteers at Petco in Raritan.
