HILLSBOROUGH: Senior citizen club news for week of June 30

CHAPTER A
Chapter A meets the first Thursday of the month in the municipal complex. We are open to new members.
Doors open at 11:30 and meeting starts at 12:30 p.m. Come early and review the activities we offer, and, of course, sign up for those that may appeal to you. We enjoy coffee and doughnuts after the meeting.
If you have a question, you can call our president, Dick Meier, at 908-359-6948.
For this month only, we’ll go to Atlantic City on July 11, instead of the first Monday of the month, which some people thought might interfere with other things going on.
The bus departs from the Pathmark lot at 9 a.m. and everyone is welcome; you don’t have to be a member of our club. The bus goes to the Taj Mahal, where you can play the slots and then stroll on the boardwalk. Call Jo for details at 908-359-6418.
Events coming up (on Thursdays unless specified):
   • Wednesday, July 6 — “Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang” at Fulton Theater, Lancaster, Pa. There are still a few vacant seats; if interested, call Dick Meier at 908-359-6948. We ride on a large, comfy coach with restroom facilities.
   • July 7 — At the regular meeting, a representative from Provident Bank will speak on long-term care insurance. Things are moving so quickly it is best to be informed.
   • Sunday, July 10 — Anniversary party at Falcons Camp, noon to 4 p.m. You’ll have one more chance to sign up at our next meeting. Cost of $25 is refunded for members. It’s $35 for guests (not refunded). New people may wonder why we do this. It’s to avoid people signing up, then deciding not to go — but we have contracted with the caterer for a specific number of people and we still have to pay.
Things start around noon and continue till 4 p.m. We’ll have music and you can dance the calories away or watch the dancers.
   • Friday, Aug. 12 — Monmouth Race Track. Bus leaves at 10:30 a.m. from Pathmark lot. Cost is $70 for admission and a great meal at Basile’s on the way home. You can put on the feed bag, in a manner of speaking, then snooze on the way home after you’ve hopefully bet on the winning horses.
   • Sunday, Aug. 14 — Annual picnic at Falcons camp from noon to 4 p.m. Talk about putting on the feed bag! We’ll have two seatings with games in between. Plenty of parking. Cost of $15 is refunded on arrival.
   • Sept. 15-19 — Boston and historical environs. Some people have been to Boston, but this time we’ll visit Lexington and Concord, known as the birthplace of the American Revolution, and see the site of the “the shot heard ‘round the world.”
We’ll see the USS Constitution, known as “Old Ironsides.” We’ll visit Salem, a coastal city with 300 years of New England history. Salem is where the witchcraft trials of 1692 were held. We’ll visit Gloucester, America’s oldest seaport, which is located on Cape Ann.
The trip of five days and four nights includes four breakfasts and four dinners. Cost is $440 per person for double occupancy and $575 for a single. We’ll have time to shop.
If you have friends who aren’t members, they would be welcome, if we have open seats. Just ask.
’’On Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. the regular card-playing group meets in the senior room. If you like to play cards, you don’t have to be a member of chapters A or B.
On Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon or longer, the mah jongg players are in the senior room. Don’t know how to play? They’ll be happy to show you. There is quite a large group and they are very dedicated to their game.
Need transportation? Call 908-369-3880 for senior transportation. Hillsborough is good to their seniors.

CHAPTER B
Chapter B members will meet on Thursday, July 14, at the Municipal Building on South Branch Road. Our doors will open at 11:30 a.m. to give everyone an opportunity to purchase tickets for upcoming events. Everyone will have equal opportunity to look over our ticket tables and buy tickets for any events on sale that day.
Tickets are sold between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Meetings start promptly at 12:30. July is our annual ice cream social and you will be able to create your own sundae. So start saving your calories.
   Tickets available:
This is your last opportunity to purchase tickets to our annual picnic, which will be held on Aug. 11 at the Polish Falcon Hall. Cost is $20 and you will get a return of $15 upon attendance at the event.
Tickets for a one-day trip to Mt. Airy Lodge scheduled for Oct. 5. This trip includes bus, $35 coin return and a comedy show called “Sex, Please – We’re Sixty”. If not sold out, we will again sell in September. Cost is $56. What a bargain.
Tickets for a trip scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16, to the famous Green Dragon Farmers & Flea Market in Lancaster, Pa. This market is the largest indoor and outdoor market on the East Coast. After a morning of shopping, we will head out to the famous Miller’s Restaurant (also in Lancaster) for a delicious lunch before heading home. Cost for this trip is $55.
Please remember to bring your checkbook so you will not lose out on these trips.
Our trip on Aug. 26 to the Monmouth Raceway is sold out. We are taking a waiting list.
Our trip to the Garden for Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J., with a side trip for lunch at Mastoris Restaurant in Bordentown, was a great success. Everyone attending enjoyed the walk through the gardens; although we did not cover all of the 35 acres, we all had a great time. Many had never been to Mastoris and were thrilled with the menu and along with the doggie bags. They stocked up on pastries from the bakery.
Our annual special Breakfast with Seniors was held at the Municipal Building on June 23. Cost was $3, which was refunded upon attendance. Invited guests from Emeritus Assisted Living and Avalon Assisted Living attended. Pancakes, eggs, pastry and bagels along with coffee and juice were on the menu. Games and prizes followed breakfast. It was a wonderful event and many thanks go to Claire Fortmiller and her committee for an outstanding job.
