HOWELL — Individuals who are objecting to township officials’ plan to purchase the Global office building on Route 9, Howell, want the public to have a say in the matter.
In response to the Township Council’s recent 4-1 vote to set aside $6.9 million for the possible purchase of the Global building, Residents Against Global Entity (RAGE) was formed.
Howell officials have said that if the township purchases the Global building from its current private owner, municipal offices will be moved out of the current Preventorium Road municipal complex and into the Route 9 structure.
In a press release issued by Howell resident Elaine Taylor, RAGE said it has organized in response to the council’s “indifference to the citizens’ point of view regarding the purchase of a multimillion-dollar office complex called the Global building on Route 9 which will be used for our town hall. This action will eliminate the heart of our township Preventorium Center (town hall).”
The goal of RAGE is to obtain signatures on a petition and to place a public question regarding the proposed purchase of the office building on the November ballot. The group has until today, June 30, to collect the signatures it needs.
“The petition will enable us to put a public referendum question on the ballot, which will enable the voters to decide if they want to purchase the Global building and make renovations, or renovate and add on to the current municipal building,” RAGE said.
