Mr. President, you made a campaign promise to protect Main Street from corporate greed. We on Main Street are unemployed, underemployed or one layoff away from needing some type of safety net. This is not a handout. We pay into Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid through our taxes.
Yet over the last few decades, Congress has swindled our taxes from the safety net programs in order to fund subsidies for oil, gas and coal companies; offshore accounts for large corporations; huge tax breaks for hedge fund managers and excessive war profiteering.
I support our troops but the large corporations who profit off our heroes are despicable. Our brave soldiers have accomplished our mission abroad and we simply can’t fiscally afford to stay there. We must turn our attention to our own country now, to fix Main Street, to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, which will create jobs.
Main Street needs a strong safety net in case we are the next ones presented with a pink slip. Yet this stealing from our safety net programs has turned their surpluses into deficit. Congress must repay what they owe but they’d rather slash these safety nets and keep our taxes to spend. This robbery has got to stop! Make Congress put the stolen money back into the safety net programs!
Main Street is fed up. Do not tamper with Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security. Don’t con us by saying you’re just making “improvements.” Don’t change the cost of living adjustments as a stealth way to make these cuts.
Mr. President, it is time for you to stand up for those you swore to serve. We on Main Street will be watching and in the next election we will vote for a candidate who really does support us through their actions not just their lips.
