CENTRAL JERSEY: DOT plans weekend work on Route 1

A Route 1 southbound traffic shift over the Heathcote Brook in South Brunswick will take place this weekend, state DOT officials announced Friday afternoon.
NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction Inc., plans to shift both Route 1 southbound travel lanes to the left (east) over the Heathcote Brook and established a new construction zone on the western portion of the highway. Route 1 northbound will remain in place.
A DOT spokesman said that weather or other factors could change the "precise timing" of the work. Motorists can check www.511nj.org for construction updates and travel information.
A posted speed-limit reduction to 45 mph will remain in effect on Route 1 through the project limits.
The work is part of an on-going, $3 million state-funded project that is replacing the Heathcote Brook culvert and stabilizing the supporting soil under the foundation footings and abutments. NJDOT is utilizing variable message signs to notify motorists of all traffic pattern changes on Route 1.
Construction is scheduled for completion in late-fall 2011.
