The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission will hold its third Moth Night of 2011 July 22 in Frost Woods, East Brunswick. Interested individuals should meet at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot on Summerhill Road.
During Moth Night, organizers use two methods — an extremely bright 175-watt entomology mercury vapor light and a sweet fermented mixture painted on tree trunks, also known as “sugaring” — to see what is flying in the parks. The mercury vapor light gives off light in wavelengths that are very attractive to moths and other insects, and the sweet mixture does the same through smell.
The public is invited to attend. Since the group will walk around in the woods, participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight.
The event will be rescheduled in case of inclement weather.
Updates will be available on the news blog at www.friendsebec.com; on Facebook at Friends of East Brunswick Environmental Commission; and Twitter, @FriendsEBEC.
