Howell man charged with robbery

JACKSON — A resident of Howell has been charged with robbery and resisting arrest following his alleged involvement in an incident in Jackson on July 12.

According to information provided by the Jackson Police Department, at about 7:36 p.m. July 12, police were notified that a purse had just been stolen from a woman who was walking outside the Regency Club apartment complex off South New Prospect Road. When officers arrived at the scene, the woman provided a description of the suspect.

Officer Jeremy Felder was the first responding officer to observe the suspect, who was later identified as Nicholas Ryland, 19, of Howell. Police said Ryland was running toward Brewers Bridge Plaza.

Officer Sean Greenberger arrived on the scene, exited his patrol vehicle and began a foot chase in pursuit of Ryland. The foot chase continued across Brewers Bridge Plaza, through Anilop Plaza and onto West County Line Road, according to police.

The foot chase continued until Ryland ran into a real estate office on West County Line Road.

As Greenberger entered the business, the employees told the officer that the suspect had just entered the men’s room.

According to police, as Greenberger entered the men’s room, Ryland was attempting to stuff cash down a toilet. Following a brief struggle, Ryland was arrested and the money was recovered.

Detective Scott Conover interviewed Ryland, and the young man was subsequently charged with robbery and resisting arrest. Jackson Municipal Court Judge Daniel Sahin set bail at $50,000.

Police said Ryland had warrants for his arrest out of Sayreville, Middlesex County. He was placed in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, after he was unable to post the required bail amount.

Detective Frank Mendez and Officer William Simon assisted with the investigation and search.
