Matawan concludes Ripken play

Ben DiSabatino grounded a single against a drawn-in infield in the sixth inning that drove inAustin Nappi with the winning run as Matawan’s 11-yearolds concluded pool play in the Cal Ripken 11-Under state baseball tournament with a 7-6 victory over East Brunswick at Toomer Field in Matawan.

Nappi slapped a single and got into scoring position off a passed ball and stole third base. Jake Burlew pitched the first 5.1 innings with relief help from John Carelli.

Matawan at 1-2 in pool play fell short of joining the four-team field in the semifinals on July 26, with the championship set for July 28 at 7 p.m. East Brunswick, South Brunswick, Montville and Millburn advanced. Michael Dunne at catcher, middle infielders Steve Salot and Derek Jordan and outfielder Carelli excelled in the field. Matawan still was involved this week in tournaments in East Brunswick and Edison.
