MONTGOMERY: Sop Local campaign is gaining momentum

MONTGOMERY — The community’s Shop Local campaign is gaining momentum.
The Township Committee is contributing $1,400, which will come from the budget of its Environmental Commission, for the cost of purchasing promotional materials.
Under the agreement, both the Montgomery Business Association (MBA) and the Environmental Commission will work together to promote the Shop Local campaign, said Patricia Graham, committee member.
”The plan is to design and purchase reusable cloth shopping bags, bearing the Shop Local logo and the Environmental Commission and Sustainable Montgomery logos,” said Ms. Graham. “The Montgomery Business Association would distribute bags to its members and the Environmental Commission and Sustainable Montgomery would distribute the bags at community events such as the Earth Day Fair.”
”There’s a lot of interest so we’re excited about the momentum,” said Jennifer Pierce of the Montgomery Business Association.
”The project is an excellent way to promote Montgomery’s local businesses, which in this economy is particularly important to our town’s residents,” said Ms. Graham. “Through the hard work of the township’s Environmental Commission and Sustainable Montgomery Committee, the project will also educate residents and promote the environmentally friendly practice of reusing shopping bags instead of always using disposable plastic or paper bags.
”Montgomery has been certified as a sustainable community, and this project is part of our work to maintain that designation and to promote environmentally friendly, sustainable practices in town. It’s a win-win situation for Montgomery.”
The Shop Local campaign began last September when the Sustainable Montgomery commission had the idea for a campaign. Due to certain restrictions, it was decided to form an entity that could support and drive the campaign in a more efficient manner. Five Montgomery business owners were brought together and volunteered to build the Montgomery Business Association.
The MBA’s next meet and greet will be Sept. 29 at Gasior’s Furniture.
