WEST WINDSOR: Superintendent marks opening

By Heather Niccoli, Staff Writer
WEST WINDSOR — School Superintendent Victoria Kniewel had a presentation for the first day of school.
”Despite Hurricane Irene I’m happy to report all the schools opened on time and on schedule, Ms. Kniewel told the Board of Education at its first meeting of the school year on Sept. 13.
The district had $1 million dollars in the school’s budget for the specific projects that were done over the summer, she said, and the district just received $10,240 from The New Jersey Clean Energy Office.
”The way we were able to do so many projects was to use the capital reserve as the local share so that we could apply for state money,” Ms. Kniewel said. She also told the board how the schools are staying steady regarding the staffing at the schools. Even with some retires and those who were on various types of leave and for teachers who started midyear.
”As you know throughout the year we hire teachers,” Ms. Kniewl said.
Ms. Kniwel mentioned how technology is a tool for communication and learning.
” I know I never thought I’d be able to give up my Sunday newspaper,” she said. “But, boy, it’s easier to carry around the iPad and access the newspaper.”
She could not go over the student enrollment because the official numbers are not complete. She said the enrollment figure would be in by Oct. 15.
