Greater Media Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter H. Smyth was named America’s Best Broadcaster by Radio Ink Magazine during the 2011Annual Radio Wayne Awards on Sept. 14 at a special luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago.
This honor is given to an individual who has made the greatest impact on the radio industry as a whole. The Radio Wayne Awards were inspired and named after Radio Wayne Cornils, a radio broadcaster who served many years as an executive vice president of the Radio Advertising Bureau. Smyth began his career with Greater Media in 1986 as general manager of WMJX-FM Boston, and over the past two decades, he has served in a variety of capacities, including group vice president of radio and chief operating officer.
Throughout his career at Greater Media, Smyth has worked to revolutionize the broadcasting industry by developing new technology and incorporating innovative services to improve media communications and meet the emerging demands of the industry.
Currently, Smyth oversees the operation of 22 AM and FM radio stations in Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Philadelphia and New Jersey; Greater Media Newspapers, a group of weekly newspapers in central New Jersey; and several telecommunications towers throughout the United States.
Smyth’s leadership has been recognized by industry leaders such as Radio Ink Magazine, a leading broadcast industry publication, which in 2005 selected Smyth as “America’s Best Broadcaster” and for the past decade has recognized him each year as one of the “40 Most Powerful People in Radio.”
In 2007, the publication named Smyth “Radio Executive of the Year,” an award that honors top executives who exemplify the values that are vital to the growth and success of radio.
Smyth has previously served as the chairman of the Radio Advertising Bureau’s board of directors. He has also served as past president of the New England Media Association and as a longtime member of the board of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters and the HD Digital Alliance Oversight Committee.
Smyth currently serves on the board of directors of the New England Baptist Hospital and the One Hundred Club of Massachusetts, an organization dedicated to enhancing the welfare and safety of families of public safety officers and firefighters. He is also a past member of the board of trustees of Emerson College and the United Way of Massachusetts.
Smyth has been recognized by numerous organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for his commitment to the community. In May 2007, he received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Hundred Club of Massachusetts and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Commerce degree from Suffolk University in Boston in 2011.
