MANVILLE: Scouts celebrate their successes from summer camp

Boy Scouts in Troop 193 received merit badges and patches they earned at summer camp and on their own at the troop’s Court of Honor on Sept. 12. The Scouts were recognized for their hard work and achievements. The Boy Scouts spent a week at summer camp up in the Adirondacks of New York state at Sabattis Adventure Camp from July 1-9. Ten Scouts and five leaders enjoyed the week of camping, cooking swimming and fun.
Scoutmaster Jim Kelly presented leatherwork and environmental science badges to Matthew Drobny; his brother Luke Drobny earned the fishing badge.
Nicholas Barras and Bradley Brown-Montalvo earned the Scout rank along with the first aid merit badge. Keilor Chaves received the Tenderfoot rank and the first aid merit badge, Nicky Lazos earned the reptile and amphibian study merit badge, and Matt Miller and Justin Olejnik both earned the rifle shooting and fishing merit badges.
Danny Shubiak earned wilderness survival and swimming merit badges while Michael Zangara earned the weather and bird study merit badges. Kenneth Zepeda, who earned the rank of Tenderfoot, also earned the first aid merit badge.
Jason Fiduk, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout and is now an assistant leader of Troop 193, was away at his first year of college. Mr. Kelly had a Polar Bear swim patch for Jason.
”For every day of every week that he was at summer camps for his entire Scouting career, he went every day and he is the ultimate polar bear,” said Mr. Kelly. The Polar Bear swim was the first thing in the morning and Scouts had to swim in the lake four out of the five days.
Those who participated in the Polar Bear swim and earned the patch included Montalvo, Chaves, Lazos, Miller, Shubiak, Zepeda and the Drobny brothers. Mike Trond, an assistant leader who went to camp, said that the camp has never given four fishing merit badges at one summer camp, but this year they awarded four to one troop — Troop 193.
Assistant Leader Mike Drobny went camping with the boys for the week. “The boys had a wonderful time and did a lot activities which enabled them to advance to another level in order to become an Eagle Scout,” he said. “The week overall was nice just a little humid and hot but overall it was fun for everybody,” he said.
The Scouts are currently holding their annual popcorn sale. The profits will benefit the Scouts who sell the popcorn and some of the money will be put into their accounts so the boys can use it toward summer camp and trips. Leader Bruce Hixson, who is chairing the sale, said an advance thank you to the community and residents who support the sale.
