By Wendy Humphrey
West Windsor, N.J. – The magical family musical, “Seussical,” presented by The Pennington Players at MCCC’s Kelsey Theatre in September/October 2010, was the winner of two awards at the New Jersey Association of Community Theaters (NJACT) Perry Awards ceremony, held at the Somerset DoubleTree Hotel on Sept. 18.
Awardees at this annual ceremony are chosen from the many community productions presented around the state during the previous theater season. Selections are based on reviews by representatives from NJACT, who view close to 500 plays during the year. More than 150 theater companies are members of NJACT.
Actor William Mercado, of Hightstown, who played General Gengis Kahn Schmidt in "Seussical," won for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The show also won for props, which were created by Elizabeth Blazejewski of Trenton, Beverly KuoHamilton of Princeton and John Maurer of Ewing.
Kelsey Theatre was nominated for a total of ten awards for its shows from 2010-11, including a second nomination for Mercado in the Best Lead Actor in a Musical category for his role in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” The last time a Kelsey show won at the Perrys was four awards for Maurer Productions’ "Driving Miss Daisy" in 2008.
