ArtAfter Hours will return 5-9 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers, 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, with a reception for the exhibition “Cast Me Not Away: Soviet Photography in the 1980s From the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection,” a screening of the 2009 film “Perestroika” and student poetry readings.
An exhibition tour with Dr. Julia Tulovsky, associate curator for Russian and Soviet NonconformistArt, will begin in the lobby at 5:30 p.m. A reception follows at 6 p.m. in the Lower Dodge Gallery.
“CastMe NotAway” presents more than 50 photographs by 18 artists who captured life as it was for ordinary Soviet people during the 1980s, just prior to the downfall of the communist system. The exhibition is on view through Nov. 13.
The screening of “Perestroika” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Max Multipurpose Room. Shot on location in Moscow, the film tells the story of astrophysicist Sasha Greenberg who returns to his native Russia in 1992 after spending 17 years in exile. A question-and-answer session with the film’s director, Slava Tsukerman, will follow the screening.
The Zimmerli Student Advisory Board will host a coffeehouse-style student poetry reading with open mic 7-8:45 p.m. in the Lower Dodge Gallery. To sign up, email [email protected]; amateurs and professionals are welcome. Coffee and cookies will be served.
The museum store will feature new merchandise and 20 percent off all purchases during the evening. Café Z will remain open until 9 p.m., with sandwiches and snacks available for purchase.
ArtAfter Hours is the evening social series held on first Wednesdays, September- July, at the museum. Visitors are invited to explore the galleries and enjoy a variety of related entertainment.
Admission is $6 for adults; $5 for adults above age 65; free of charge for museum members and Rutgers students, faculty and staff (with identification) and children under age 18.
