‘State of the Schools’ talk to be offered

JACKSON — All Jackson parents and residents are invited to attend the annual educational forum and State of the Schools presentation to be held at the Oct. 18 Board of Education meeting.

There will be an open discussion about the Jackson School District’s educational program.

“Every board meeting features opportunities for public input, of course, but this is a chance to really set some time aside to have an open, public discussion about our curriculum, our successes and the ways we can further improve our students’ educational experience,” board President Sharon Dey said. “We encourage everyone to come out to listen, to ask questions and to participate.”

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center of Jackson Memorial High School, 101 Don Connor Blvd.

According to a press release, the board is also encouraging residents to attend meetings during the rest of the year as well.

The board holds two meetings each month. The first is called a committee of the whole meeting, also referred to as a workshop meeting. During these meetings, the board members review the agenda on which they will be voting the following week, hear presentations from administrators, and discuss issues that were previously discussed in various board committees.

“These meetings tend to be more informal and include a good deal of back-andforth among board members as we ask questions and get clarification on various agenda items,” Dey said. “It helps us stay informed as a group about every area, instead of having just a few members on a number of different committees. Instead, we are a whole committee, together.”

The board’s workshop meetings are typically held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the administration building.

The board’s business meetings are typically held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the FineArts Center of Jackson Memorial High School.
