ALLENTOWN — Incumbent Mayor Stuart Fierstein will remain at the helm in Allentown, and as officials go about counting the provisional ballots cast in the Nov. 8 election, the race for two seats on the Borough Council remained too close to definitively call.
Fierstein, who was the only mayoral candidate on the ballot, received 314 votes, according to unofficial results posted on the Monmouth County website.
Late in the campaign, Madeline Gavin announced that she was running as a write-in candidate for mayor. The unofficial results showed that 212 write-in votes were cast in the mayoral race, but the results did not indicate how many, if any, write-in votes Gavin received.
The race for two council seats saw all contenders within 4 percent of one another, with votes for all four candidates split almost equally. Incumbent Republican Michael Schumacher appeared to hold onto his council post for a seventh three-year term, receiving 302 votes.
Democrat Angela Anthony appeared to have defeated incumbent appointed Republican Donald Swaysland by one vote. According to the unofficial results, Anthony received 285 votes and Swaysland received 284 votes.
Trailing the field, but not by much, was Democrat Raymond Gooley, with 257 votes.
The results of the election will remain unofficial until they are certified by Monmouth County. That process can take up to a week. Additional coverage of the election will be published in the Nov. 16 Examiner.
