EVENTS Today is Veterans Day and many townships and boroughs will be marking the day with ceremonies.
For the Princetons, Spirit of Princeton will be holding its 14th event at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 between Nassau Street and Mercer Street and Township Mayor Chad Goerner and Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman will be there.
”It’s Veterans Day and we have to honor all of our troops and support our men and women who have been over in Iraq and Afghanistan and ones who have died for our country,” said Ray Wadsworth, chairman of Spirit of Princeton.
Mr. Wadsworth will help some children place reefs on the monument.
Herb Hobler, treasurer for Sprit of Princeton, will speak.
Plainsboro will have a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. at the veterans monument located on the grounds of the municipal building
”It is a little ceremony that we do,” said Plainsboro Township Mayor Peter Cantu. “We try to recognize the veterans who have served.”
West Windsor will have a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Dutch Neck World War II monument to remember the residents of West Windsor who fought in that war.
The main event will be at noon at the Municipal Building.
Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh and Commander Bob Cox of American Legion Post 76 will speak. Along with the American Legion Post 76, Veterans of Foreign Wars 925 will also be there.
There will be a presentation of colors by the West Windsor police honor guard unit and taps by Det. Robert Fow.
Montgomery will hold a ceremony and a dedication of the Montgomery Park Veterans Memorial from noon to 4 p.m. and then a dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. at Princeton Elks Lodge, 354 Route 518, Blawenburg. Mayor Mark Caliguire and J. William Middendorf II, former U.S. ambassador and former secretary of the Navy will both speak at the dinner.
Rocky Hill Borough is doing something different than the other municipalities. It will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Panicaro Park.
”A lot of people work on Friday. We usually do it the Sunday closest to the 11th to have a better turnout so the actual veterans in town can attend,” said Rocky Hill Borough Mayor Ed Zimmerman.
