PRINCETON: Fair Tax to meet over revaluation

By Victoria Hurley-Schubert, Staff Writer
Princeton Fair Tax is hosting a meeting to discuss its recently filed lawsuit on Thursday night.
A lawsuit challenging the validity of the 2010 revaluation in Princeton Borough and Princeton township that seeks to have it thrown out and redone was filed in this Mercer County Court earlier this month.
The 14 plaintiffs are challenging the revaluation results and are charging that the revaluation was flawed and the defendants failed to hold public hearings on notice with opportunity for public comment in relation to the revaluation and assessment methodologies.
They are suing Princeton Borough; Princeton Township; the Mercer County Board of Taxation; Neal Snyder, the tax assessor; Appraisal Systems Inc, the company hired to do the revaluation.
Princeton Fair tax leaders Jim Firestone and Dale Meade will discuss the timetable for the lawsuit and what consolidation means for it. Consolidation may force a new revaluation or the enforcement of the proposed compliance plan.
”We know it will make our lawsuit easier instead of harder,” said Mr. Firestone. “We’ll be dealing with one government instead of two, as one takes on the responsibilities of the other.”
He will also be talking about fundraising to pay for the lawsuit. Partial funding so far includes $25,000 was from by the estate of Elanor Lewis and $10,000 raised by Princeton Fair Tax, said Mr. Firestone.
Legal counsel will also be on hand to explain matters.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Township Municipal building in the main room and is open to the public.
