Vikings’ Gabel second at state gym AA

North Brunswick Township High School’s Alexis Gabel was second in the all-around competition at the NJSIAA Gymnastics Championships that were held Nov. 12 at Montgomery High School.

The senior scored 37.8 in finishing second to Freehold’s Danielle Verdon (38.45).

Gabel won the Central Jersey Section II all-around title the week before.

In the individual events, Gabel tied for second on the vault with Piscataway’s Asya Cureton, with both scoring 9.6.

Gabel also tied for second on the floor exercise with Jennifer King of Freehold (9.6).

The Viking gymnast also medaled on the uneven bars and tied for eighth ((9.375) and 11th on the balance beam (9.225).

Away from Montgomery, at Holmdel Park at the NJSIAA Group State Cross Country Championships, South Brunswick High School’s Tyler Blackburn was a “wild card” qualifier for this Saturday’s Meet of Champions.

The top 10 individuals and top three teams at the group championships automatically qualify for the MOC. After that, the 10 fastest non-automatic qualifying times earn the wild card entry to the meet.

Blackburn, a senior, was 14th in the Group IV race, but his 16:29 was fast enough for him to get one of the 10 wild card spots.

South Brunswick finished 11th in the team competition (277).

The MOC will start at 11 a.m. with the girls championship race, followed by the boys race at 11:45.
