Test your Monmouth County IQ on Jan. 11

The Monmouth County Audubon Society will present “Test Your Monmouth County Nature IQ” at the 8 p.m. Jan. 11 meeting of the Monmouth County Audubon Society to be held at the Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Road, Fair Haven. The public is welcome and admission is free.

Bob Henschel, president of the organization, will act as emcee for this game show-style event. Questions will range from birds (how many different owls inhabit New Jersey every year?) to plants, (what does a dog-toothed violet and a catbrier have in common?) to questions about our parks (where was the resident female bald eagle at the Manasquan Reservoir born?).

According to a press release, Henschel is uniquely suited to organize and produce this event. Having worked for the Monmouth County Park System until his retirement a few years ago, he is arguably the most knowledgeable person about the flora and fauna of the area. The evening promises to be a little silly, a little challenging and a lot of fun.

The Monmouth County Audubon Society, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is dedicated to the enjoyment and study of nature, wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and education. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month — September through May — at the Church of the Nativity.

Guest speakers address a wide variety of nature-related topics, and refreshments are provided. In addition, the group sponsors at least one field trip per month, and members receive “The Osprey,” the club’s bimonthly newsletter.
