The South Brunswick High School’s varsity boys’ basketball team is performing very well so far this season according to head coach Joseph Hoehman.
"The boys’ performance up to this point has been very good," Mr. Hoehman said.
According to Mr. Hoehman, the team’s current record is 4-1. The teams’ only loss has been against North Brunswick in the championship game of the Brunswick Classic Tournament. He said that the team’s record last year was 11-12.
Mr. Hoehamn said that he believes the teams’ success this season is because of the constant competitions the boys partake in at practice.
"The boys have been competing every day in practice, which has led to success on game days," Mr. Hoehman said.
He said that the teams’ biggest strengths this season are speed and athleticism, giving the team a larger advantage compared to teams from past years. However, he said that the team, as a whole, can definitely make improvements on its defense.
"An area where we can improve is on the defensive end," Mr. Hoehman said. "We are still looking to improve on the defensive side every day."
Mr. Hoehman said that it is difficult to pinpoint the team’s toughest competitor because all of the team’s they play have equal skills which "is the key to great teams."
Mr. Hoehman said the team consists of five seniors, six juniors a sophomore and two freshmen.
The team does not have any captains this year, but Mr. Hoehman said that the seniors are showing exemplary leadership.
He also said that the upperclassmen lead by example and are wiser to the consequences of game outcomes, and encourage their teammates to do better.
"The upperclassmen try to lead by example," Mr. Hoehman said. "They know what it feels like to finish the season on a loss and they want to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year. They try to maintain the team’s focus every day."
Mr. Hoehman said the overall goals of this season are to play well on the court and compete in every game to the best of its ability.
He said that if the team continues that pattern there is a likely opportunity that the team can "bring home some hardware (trophies) at the end of this season."
