The Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated its 110th anniversary on Dec. 3 with a luncheon at Nauvoo Restaurant, Fair Haven, with more than 40 members and guests attending.
At the anniversary celebration, the contributions of chapter members, to the community, state and nation were acknowledged by state officials including Gov. Chris Christie and the Board of Chosen Freeholders. Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter was praised for its service to the next generation and for its commitment to preserve the memory and spirit of the patriots who achieved American independence, according to a press release from the chapter.
The Monmouth Chapter of DAR was organized on June 29, 1900. In 1935, the chapter divided and Shrewsbury Towne Chapter was formed. Over the years Shrewsbury Towne and Monmouth chapters shared many joint meetings, luncheons and patriotic activities. In 2004, the two chapters reunited and formed the Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter.
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children. Nationally DAR members volunteer more than 250,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students and support schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding $1 million, the press release states.
