LAWRENCE: Lane residents being polled on traffic plan

By Lea Kahn, Staff Writer
Lawrence Township police officers are going door to door on Wayside Lane — but not because of a crime issue on the street.
The officers are seeking residents’ input on a proposal to ban left turns from Lawrence Road/Route 206 onto Wayside Lane, Municipal Manager Richard Krawczun told Township Council Tuesday night.
Wayside Lane is off Lawrence Road/Route 206 near Eggerts Crossing Road.
The township would like residents’ input by Jan. 12 — either by speaking to an officer who visits the residence, or by calling police Lt. Thomas Ritter and leaving a message, along with their name and address. Lt. Ritter may be contacted at 609-844-7116.
The township is considering asking the state Department of Transportation, which controls the state highway, to prohibit left turns, Mr. Krawczun said. It would affect motorists who are traveling south on Lawrence Road/Route 206.
Township officials are concerned about safety at the intersection of Wayside Lane and Lawrence Road, Mr. Krawczun said, adding the issue has been discussed by the township’s Public Safety Advisory Committee.
There is a lot of traffic activity in a condensed space, Mr. Krawczun said. Motorists turn right onto Lawrence Road from Eggerts Crossing Road, and some might try to quickly turn left onto Wayside Lane.
”Before we introduce an ordinance, we would like to get feedback (from Wayside Lane residents). It is important to understand their concerns,” he said, adding that residents of nearby streets will not be surveyed because the proposal won’t have as much impact on them.
If a Wayside Lane resident is not at home when an officer knocks on the door, a letter outlining the proposal will be left at the home, Mr. Krawczun said. The letter asks the resident to contact Lt. Ritter by Jan. 12.
