Yesterday (Jan. 3) proved to be one of the scariest days of my life. The pipe that connects our gas meter to the New Jersey Natural Gas line corroded after 30 years of service.
I had smelled that pungent odor of gas for a few days as the connection was breaking down and we thought it was the car, the lawnmower, or snowplow in the garage.
The sudden cold weather must have pushed the rust to the breaking point. Something told me to go look at the meter. I did and I heard a hissing sound along with the stinky smell.
I immediately ran inside, called New Jersey Natural Gas and got the heck out of the house with my daughter and the dog, and went to my neighbor’s home.
Within minutes, Marlboro police, EMS and the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 arrived at my house, followed very closely by New Jersey Natural Gas. They assessed and handled the situation quickly, safely and professionally in the freezing weather.
What could have been a disaster was averted by these brave individuals who I can’t thank enough, especially the volunteers! And thanks to my neighbors the Sterns for letting us stay warm and safe in their house.
Thank you so very much from my family and myself. Everyone should check the gas meter connections now and then, and follow the rule: if you smell something, say something.
