Faith groups to honor King
Congregations from throughout the area will gather 7 p.m. Jan. 15 for the Martin Luther King service at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 21 Rev. Wm. L. Powell Dr., Hightstown. All are welcome.
The event, sponsored by the Windsor-Hightstown Area Ministerium, features choirs from area churches and synagogues including the Voices of Mt. Olivet.
The speaker will be the Rev. Calvin Nadir Powell, associate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Trenton. Rev. Powell is the son of the Rev. Willkam Powell, late pastor of Mt. Olivet.
WHAM is an interfaith consortium of active clergy persons dealing with the common problems and opportunities facing people of faith.
Youth to celebrate King
On Jan. 16, the youth at the First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown will prepare night care packages in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in celebration of his Jan. 15 birthday. The packages will be given to Rise for distribution.
The church requests donations of pajamas, for toddlers and children, socks, underwear and soft toothbrushes.
Donations can be dropped off the evening of Jan. 15 on the back porch of the church office, 320 North Main St., Hightstown.

Essential drive in honor of MLK
Rise, of Hightstown, hosts its annual Put Poverty to Bed Drive this January in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
The drive was inspired by an event started in 2011 by the youth group at the First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown. The drive collects essential items for children including pajamas, fuzzy slippers, tooth brushes, body washes, and shampoo.
Donations can be made at the Rise Food Pantry, 225 Franklin St., and at the Greater Goods Thrift Store, 14 Rogers Ave. The Rise Food Pantry is opened 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Also donations are accepted at the Greater Goods Thrift Store 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
