A fter dominating performances at the Greater Middlesex Conference Relays, a pair of South Brunswick girls relay teams won medals at the NJSIAA Group IV Indoor Relays.
The quartet ofAlicia Osley, Rochelle Mc- Donald, Julia Lekht and Cayla Del Piano finished second in the sprint medley, running a 4:14.34. The relay consists of one 400-meter leg followed by two 200-meter legs and the 800-meter anchor.
The Vikings’ distance medley team of Nicolette Mateescu (1,200), Osley (400), Melanie Huen (800) and Del Paino (1,600) posted a 12:40.89 in finishing fourth.
The Group IV State Relays were held Jan. 13 at the Bennett IndoorAthletic Complex in Toms River.
The GMC Relays were held Jan. 6 at the Bennett Complex, with the Viking girls winning five events.
The Vikings won the sprint medley with the lineup of Osley, McDonald, Savannah Barton and Del Piano. Their winning time was 4:20.23.
Mateescu, Taiyana Madden, Nicole Sender and Del Piano were the winning DMR team in 13:00.68.
South Brunswick’s team of Danielle Resnick, Emily Giarratano, Stephanie Zheng and Kristin Tran won the 4×800 in 10:57.58.
The Viking hurdlers shined in the 4×55- meter shuttle hurdles relay. Julia Lekht, Barton, KhakijaMcDonald andAspenMcMillan won by more than 1.5 seconds in 35.01.
In the field relays, Alyssa McFarlane had the best throw of the shot-put competition (31-11). Combined with Nateya Harris’ 29-8, it gave the Viking girls the win.
In the non-scoring pole vault, the Vikings had another first. Lindsay Carbone (8-6) and Lindsay Del Piano (8-0) had the two best vaults of the competition and were first.
In the 4×200 novice relay, another nonscoring event, the sprinters had their day in the 4×200. It was Monet Hall, Zyjira, Nicole Cavett and Jada Rae Poku teaming for a win in 2:01.04.
North Brunswick’s girls got a win in the 4×400 relay. Casandra Destafano, Haley Francis, Imani Fox and Kaitlyn Davis beat Woodbridge’s team by just .03 — 4:16.38- 4:14.41.
The South Brunswick boys registered wins as well.
The Viking tandem of Kaseem Davis and Christian Larbie each cleared 6-0 (tying with Sayreville’s Zaioquis Wright) to win the high jump relay (12-0).
Like the girls, the Viking sprinters won the non-scoring novice 4×200 with the team of Rohit Nalmada, Scott Cannon, Rajiv Mukundan and Alex Kainer clocking 1:40.87.
With the relay season behind them, the focus will turn to individual events for the Viking and Raider track and field athletes. The GMC Indoor Championships are Jan. 28 back at the Bennett Complex, which will host all of the state meets, beginning with the Central Jersey Group IV Championships on Feb. 11.
