LAWRENCE: Snow didn’t stick around, but it might be back

By Lea Kahn, Staff Writer
Just in case the mild temperatures made Lawrence Township residents forget it is still winter, Mother Nature delivered a not-so-subtle reminder that it’s not over yet and dumped about three inches of snow on the township Saturday.
The snow, now gone due to 50-degree weather, began falling early Saturday morning and was the first storm of 2012.
It caused the cancellation of Lawrence Township public school district sporting events.
The free rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs, sponsored by the Lawrence Township Health Department, also fell victim to the snowstorm. It has been rescheduled for Jan. 28 at the U.S. Army National Guard Armory on Eggerts Crossing Road, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Almost as soon as the snow began falling, three snowplows were sent out on the road at 4 a.m., said Municipal Manager Richard Krawczun. Two more snowplows were dispatched at 6:30 a.m., and 11 more were added about 30 minutes later.
The snowplows had finished clearing township streets by 7 p.m., but one snowplow was kept on duty until 11 p.m. to respond to reports of icy roads, Mr. Krawczun said. Those snowplows used about 250 tons of rock salt.
There were a few reported accidents — mostly of cars sliding off the road on the Trenton Freeway and Province Line Road. There were also two reports of cars sliding into utility poles on Denow Road.
