At its January meeting, the Hillsborough Public Library Advisory Board elected new officers for 2012 and unanimously appointed an emeritus member, one of only three such appointments in the board’s history.
The board also elected three Hillsborough residents to fill open positions on the 11-person board.
Elected to second terms as president and vice president were Christine Kretz and Maggie Gagliardi, respectively. Judy Haas and Nandini Dutta were re-elected as treasurer and secretary, respectively.
Appointed as an emeritus member was Carter Dreves, who has served nine consecutive of service years, the maximum allowable.
”We are pleased to have Carter continue as a valued resource to the board and the library,” said President Christine Kretz. “The appointment recognizes the many contributions Carter made during his tenure on the board. As an emeritus member, he will contribute to help us make Hillborough’s library outstanding.”
Library Director Ed Hoag thanked Dreves for his years of service and said that “dynamic libraries don’t just happen. They are supported and maintained by dynamic and committed individuals like Carter Dreves.”
Mr. Dreves served as board president for four terms, vice-president for two and chaired many committees. During his presidency the board upgraded the library’s lighting, renovated the large display cabinet at its entry, re-carpeted and expanded its children’s room, created a multi-media/writing center, and enhanced its Internet services and patron programs. He also led the board in revising its bylaws and mission in creating a high school liaison member position and creating the board’s finance, improvements, events and fund-raising committees.
Other persons previously named emeritus board members are James Older and Janet Singley (deceased), the library’s founder.
Elected as new members were Judy Winchock, Diane Martin and Connie Harbison. They will fill positions left open by Mr. Dreves, Karen Briegs and David Lin.
The advisory board is a volunteer group that advises the library in the interest of providing services and resources for residents. Persons interested in becoming a member can obtain information at the library or online at www.somerset.lib.nj.us/hillsborough.
