SOUTH BRUNSWICK: SBHS gridiron stars announce college plans

By Ed Birch, Special Writer
Two stars of this year’s South Brunswick Vikings Varsity Football Team have signed Letters of Intent and have announced their future college plans.
Seniors Jevon Tyree has committed to play for the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights and Darrell Harper has accepted an athletic scholarship with the University of New Haven’s Chargers in Connecticut.
"I was even more interested in Rutgers than they thought. I knew all along that the Rutgers program would be a perfect fit for me," Jason said during a brief signing ceremony at the high school on Ridge Road Wednesday. "God directed my path, and I am very excited to be playing for such a great program that is so close to home."
Jason said that part of his motivation came from another star alumnus that played for Rutgers and is now likely bound for the NFL.
"I am very close with Mohamed Sanu who is a graduate of my high school and was a star at Rutgers," Jason said. "I have big shoes to fill in my football future."Mark Tyree, the proud father, is a former All-American Lacrosse player also from Rutgers, who now teaches Physical Education and coaches at the Rutgers Prep School in Somerset.
Mr Tyree said that he "is very happy that Jevon made the decision to become part of Rutgers."
Jevon said he was undecided all this weekend after the coaching changes that were happening at Rutgers with former Head Coach Greg Schiano leaving the program to take on head coaching duties for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL.
"I was really down when Coach Schiano announced that he was leaving," Jason said.
Newly named Head Coach Kyle Flood and Mohamed Sanu both assured Jason that he would be making a wise choice by coming part of the Scarlet Knight program.
Other front running schools he considered were Georgia Tech in Atlanta and the University of Connecticut in Storrs.
Jason Tyree played nine games for the Vikings this year and carried for 534 total yards in 63 attempts, averaging 8.5 yards per carry.
He also had four punt returns for 92 total yards. His longest return was 60 yards, and he scored 10 rushing touchdowns for the Vikings this season.
Jevon as three brothers, Michael, 24, Seam,21, and Breein, 14.
Darrell Harper, the other half of the Vikings backfield, has accepted a scholarship from the University of New Haven.
Darrell will be playing for the Chargers in their Division II competitions.
Both players helped the Vikings reach a historic 10-1 season this year with the only loss coming in the semi-final game of the state championship playoffs.
High School Head Coach Rick Mantz said he is "very, very, proud" of these two outstanding athletes.
"Both of these men excelled on the football field and in our school," Coach Mantz said. "They are role models and leaders."
Coach Mantz also said that the success of players like Mohamed Sanu and his future success in the NFL, would put Vikings Football on the map.
