Rwandan Genocide Survivor to Speak at MCCC

By Saveria Symons
West Windsor, NJ:  Mercer County Community College’s Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center will host a talk on Romeo Dallaire’s book "Shake Hands with the Devil," led by Rwandan genocide survivor, Eugenie Mukeshimana on Wed., Feb. 29, 4:30 p.m.
Mukeshimana is the founder of the Genocide Survivors Support Network, whose mission is to help genocide survivors rebuild their lives, and to educate communities about the crime of genocide. She emigrated to the USA in 2001 with her daughter and is a graduate of the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York.
“Shake Hands with the Devil” is an account by Canadian general Roméo Dallaire who "watched as the devil took control of paradise on earth and fed on the blood of the people we were supposed to protect." Dallaire served as force commander of the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda, whose assignment was to help two warring parties achieve the peace they both wanted. Instead, he was exposed to a barbarous civil war and genocide.
In one hundred days Dallaire saw the killing of more than eight hundred thousand Rwandans, and although he rescued thousands, his call for more support from the world body fell on deaf ears.
