Walgreen’s on South Main Street is offering immuNizations for help those who want shots without needing to go to the doctor.
Anthony Lawrence, a pharmacist at the store, said Walgreens just gave flu shots until about a year ago, when some of the stores started with other immunizations. Now that service is in all stores.
”They want to get more into not just ‘count pills and pour,’ he said. “They want to get more involved with the patients’ health. We do blood pressure screening for free. To keep people well is the main thing.”
According to Mr. Lawrence, every one of the immunizations listed is in stock:
Pneumococcal (pneumonia) for adults 65 and older, individuals who smoke, have asthma or chronic/immunocompromising condition (e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or liver disease);
Shingles for adults 60 or older;
Influenza (flu) everyone 9 years old and older;
Hepatitis A & B for healthcare workers, international travelers or individuals who have chronic liver disease or immunocompromising condition, and
Tetanus/Diphtheria for adults, who should get a booster shot every 10 years.
Other immunizations include tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis and whooping cough for teenagers and adults who have close contact with infants less than a year old;
Meningococcal (meningitis) for ages 11 to 18 including college students and military recruits;
Measles/mumps/rubella for adults born after 1956;
Varicella (chicken pox) adults born after 1980 who have not had chicken pox; and human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical cancer for males and females ages 9-26.
”Any pharmacist who is here can give the immunization,” said Dr. Lawrence. “We can run it through and see if their insurance will cover it. If it is not, we can give them the cash price.”
Some of the rare immunizations are not offered in Manville but at the larger stores, like Somerville.
No appointments are Needed. Dr. Lawrence said immunizations are available all day, every day.
