Science fair for kids coming Thursday, March 8
Youngsters are encouraged to participate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) events during the first week in March, which is Technology Innovation Week.
The week culminates with a science fair for grades K-12 on Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. Team 75 (Hillsborough High School Roboraiders) and the Hillsborough Public Library are co-hosting the fair Students in grades 5-8 will be demonstrating science projects. No registration required.
• Robodyssey — Robodyssey Systems will provide robots to use while teaching how to program a robot using Microsoft Visual Basic. The final challenge will be a robot competition. Saturday, March 3, at 10 a.m. for grades 4-6, and 1:30 for grades 7-12 at 1:30 p.m.
• Afterschool Science (grades K-2) — Hands-on science fun as we explore inventors from our past and present! Grades K-2 will meet Monday, March 5, at 4 p.m. and grades 3-5 on Tuesday, March 6, at 4:30 p.m.
• Preschool Science (ages 4-6) — Kids love science! Join us for some stories and hands-on activities as you and your child explore science concepts together! Tuesday, March 6, at 10 a.m.
Upcoming programs intended for adults. Registration is required:
• Two computer training sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, March 14. Registration is required. The library has a limited number of laptops for patrons to use, so register early if you need to use one. Patrons may also bring their own laptops, or just watch the presentation.
Part 1 (of two) of Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007 will be held at 2 p.m. Part 1 (of two) of Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007 will be at 3:30 p.m.
• Monday Morning Moms — Programs for mothers and caregivers are offered at 10 a.m. at the library. The topics of discussion come with recommended resources. On March 12, the program is children’s dental health. A pediatric dentist will visit and talk about early childhood dental care.
• Evening movie — “J. Edgar,” a Clint Eastwood film about FBI Director Hoover and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Watts, will be shown Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m.
• Elder Care — The ABC’s of Aging and Home Care, which will talk about services and resources in the community for support and care of family members in need, will be given by Barbara McDonald RN, from the Community Visiting Nurse Association on Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. A question-and-answer period will be held.
• Book discussion — Join the Friends of the Library for a discussion of “The Paris Wife” by Paula McClain. Tuesday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.
• Afternoon movie — “Ides of March,” a political drama directed by George Clooney, will be shown Wednesday, March 14, at 1:30 p.m.
• Acoustic music — In the library’s “West Wing,” Seasons creates a fusion of Celtic, folk, original and popular music. Wednesday, March 14, at 7 p.m.
• Friday movie — “The Descendants,” a comedy-drama starring George Clooney, will be shown Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m.
