The length of terms for newly elected Borough Council members in 2013 will be determined by lot.
The council, which will convene in January 2013, will be made up of six members who will serve staggered terms.
This means for the first election, members will serve terms of varying length. Two council people will serve one-year terms, two will serve two-year terms and two will serve three-year terms.
All candidates will run for a full three-year term and the terms will be decided by lot at the reorganization meeting, said Maeve Cannon, borough attorney.
The terms will basically be drawn from a hat.
The drawn terms are binding for the indicated length.
”You don’t get to swap it,” said Township attorney Ed Schmierer. “You don’t get to trade it.”
At the end of their designated term, the council members can then run for re-election for a full term.
