Landy, Monroe, finishes USASA season well

SMS Snowboard Team finishes USASA Southern Vermont Series strong
Bromley, Okemo, Mount Snow, Vt. – The Stratton Mountain School Snowboard Team competed in the USASA Southern Vermont Series final weekend at the Carinthia Parks at Mount Snow March 3 and 4.
In Slopestyle (SS), seventh-grader Kiersten Edwards, Londonderry, Vt., took first in her age group for the Menehune Girls. Freshman Maverick Shaw, Winhall, Vt., took first in his division for Breaker Boys, and seventh-grader Rakai Tait, Stratton, Vt., placed second in the Breaker Boys age group. Freshman Julia Marino, Westport, Conn., p0laced first in the Youth Women division. Eighth-grader Xander Raith, Nantucket, Mass., placed first for Youth Men; freshman JP McArdle, Northport, N.Y., placed sixth in Youth Men; sophomore Jack Griffin, Franklin Lakes, N.J. placed seventh in Youth Men; freshman Andrew Tousignant, Sandy Hook, Conn., placed 15th; eighth-grader Evan Werner, Fair Haven, N.J. placed 16th; and freshman Mason Geils, New Fairfield, Conn., placed 19th.
For the Junior division, junior Marian Lobell, Middletown, N.J. took top honors by finishing second in her age group. For the Junior division men, junior Dan Landy, Monroe, N.J., took first place; junior Chip Linton, Hingham, Mass., placed 5th; and junior Peter Cerulo, West Windsor, Vt., placed eighth.
“The Saturday am slope heat rode in some tougher weather and light but the afternoon was perfect,” said Dave Redden, SMS Head Amateur Coach. “Last week’s snowstorm coupled with the 30-40 ft jump line that followed the down-up box-rail and down tube or flat box to down box option provided an optimal opportunity to showcase the skills of the series’ regulars.”
For the Halfpipe (HP) competition on Sunday, Edwards was again on top for the Menehune Girls division in first, and Tait took 3rd for the Breaker Boys. Sophomore Noelle Edwards, Stamford, Conn., placed first for Youth Women, with Marino in second. Raith finished first for Youth Men, McCardle third, Tousignant ninth; Werner 10th, and Geils 11th in the competitive Youth Men division.
In the Junior division, it was the sophomore from Rye, N.Y. Karen Kobayashi’s turn to dial up the heat, finishing first, with Lobell taking second. For the Junior Men, Linton scored third, junior Josh Cohen, Winhall, Vt., placed fifth; freshman Mike Boylan, Red Bank, N.J., placed sixth; and Cerulo took seventh.

Stratton Mountain School is a ski and snowboard academy located at the base of Stratton Mountain. The school is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year (1972-2012). SMS serves students in grades 8 – 12 with winter programs for 7th graders. The SMS community of students, faculty, coaches and staff share the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
