EAST WINDSOR: WTC steel to pass through area

A piece of World Trade Center steel that survived the 9/11 attacks will pass through the local community during a World Trade Center Steel Run this Saturday. The steel is being transported from New York en route to Princeton for a proposed memorial.
A group of riders will depart from Friends of Firefighters, an old firehouse in Brooklyn at 199 Van Brunt Street promptly at 9 a.m. The group will travel 88 miles from the Brooklyn Queens Expressway to Verrazano Bridge to Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey Turnpike, with a stop at Molly Pitcher rest area. Then the group will proceed south on the turnpike to Exit 7A, onto Route 195 to Route 295 to Route 95 to Route 206 into Princeton.
On March 23, it was reported to the Herald that the East Windsor Volunteer Fire Department No. 2 canceled its plans to be stationed on an overpass on Wyckoff Mills Road while the WTC passes through the community on March 24 due to safety concerns.
A ceremony will take place at the Mercer Engine Company No. 3 on Witherspoon Street when the beam arrives in Princeton. The ceremony is free to attend. A donation is suggested for those that wish to attend the reception that will follow at the firehouse.
The $20 fee for the run covers the tolls from Brooklyn to Princeton and the reception upon arrival in Princeton. The group will be escorted by Fire Department of New York and Port Authority until the Outerbridge, where it will met by the New Jersey State Police. Riders will receive wristbands and stickers for their headlamps to indicate they are part of the group. Tolls are about $17.
Rider participants are welcome, but pre-registration is preferred. Participants can e-mail [email protected] for more information.
