New Brunswick Jazz Project Women in Jazz Month 2012 Concludes with Trombonist Emily Asher & Vocalist Vanessa Perea

By Virginia DeBery
Thursday March 29, The Emily Asher Quartet Will light up the stage at Makeda in New Brunswick. Emily came to the attention of NBJP last year during their first Women in Jazz month. Emily has performed at private events for Kofi Anan, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw . This past year Emily recorded and performed with Wycliffe Gordon on his "Hello Pops!" tribute to Louis Armstrong, and performed in Nicholas Payton’s Television Studio Orchestra. Her bold, expressive style has led to sharing the stage with Branford Marsalis, Frank Wess, Anat Cohen, John Allred, and many others. Originally from Seattle, Emily earned three Bachelors degrees from the U. of Washington and she completed her masters in music performance from CUNY Queens College. She has been so busy performing, touring and recording as a side-woman and with her own band Garden Party, the exciting, innovative street jazz band Baby Soda, at is has been hard to get her back to New Brunswick—but what a terrific performer to help NBJP draw this exciting month to a close.
Friday March 30 At Sophie’s Bistro in Somerset, vocalist Vanessa Perea Will Sing March Out accompanied by a great group of young musicians. Vanessa also was introduced to NBJP audiences during Women in Jazz Month last year. She quickly became a crowd favorite and has become a part of the NBJP family appearing regularly throughout the year. Vanessa has sung a few songs with other artists this month—at Tumulty’s with the Robert Edwards Group and last week with Mimi Jones and The Jazz Women Band both at the Hyatt and Makeda. But Friday at Sophie’s is all Vanessa —a fitting way to end the March tribute to Women in Jazz. Come out and enjoy the evening.!
