THE LONE BUGLER

150 YEARS OF MILITARY MUSICAL HONORS

THE LONE BUGLER 1SG United States Army Retired Richard Pinter will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of  the military bugle call “Taps” the most emotional piece of music ever composed. It was composed in 1862 on the Civil War Battlefield. This bugle call has since been woven into the historical fabric of our Nation.

The bugle call commonly known as “Taps” is known throughout the United States as part of the military honors accorded at Funeral, Memorial Services, and Wreath Laying Ceremonies held for members of the uniformed services and Veterans.

In July of 1862 following a bloody seven day battle at Berkeley Plantation VA Union General Daniel Butterfield and bugler Oliver Willcox Norton composed the bugle call “Taps”. This call was used to bury his estimated 600 fallen comrades with full battlefield Honors. The call was also used to signal the end of military activities.

The bugle call “Taps” is now codified by the uniformed services as the last call of the day and to signal lights out. It is still sounded today at the end of each and every day on all military installations.

“Taps” has become the signature, solemn musical farewell and final Honor from our Nation for members of the uniformed services and veterans who have faithfully served the United States during times of War and Peace.

When sounded “Taps” summons emotions of loss, pride, honor, respect and encourages Americans to remember patriots who served the United States with honor and valor.

This 150th Anniversary of “Taps will be celebrated with events and Ceremonies throughout our Nation.

On Armed Forces Day May 19, 2012 a Ceremony will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington Virginia. Over 200 buglers are expected to perform a mass sounding of “Taps” and also sound “Taps”, at monuments throughout the cemetery after the bell sounds at noon.

Formal National Anniversary of “Taps Ceremonies will be concluded with a three day event from June 22 thru June 24, 2012 at the birthplace of “Taps” Berkeley Plantation in Charles City Virginia.

Most military buglers believe that this bugle call “Taps” should be designated as our National Song of Remembrance. Last year Congressman Tom Reed of New York introduced Bill H.R. 595 To amend title 36, United States Code, to designate the musical piece commonly known as "Taps" as the National Song of Remembrance, and for other purposes. The bill died in the House last year. Buglers throughout our Nation are working to get the Bill reintroduced this year. You are urged to contact your Representatives to help us get this Bill reintroduced and passed.

THE LONE BUGLER 71 year old U.S.Army retired First Sergeant Richard Pinter will once again perform his 12th Annual 21 plus Ceremonies to honor his fallen comrades and their families. 1SG Pinter has been performing these Patriotic  Ceremonies since his retirement as Band Master of the Adjutant Generals 276th Army Band Philadelphia PA in 2000. To help  commemorate the 150th Anniversary of “Taps 1SG Pinter will perform as part of the May 19th Armed Forces Day Cereminies at Arlington National Cemetery and in June at the birth place of “Taps” the Berkeley Platation in Virginia. Last year 1SG Pinter spoke to audiences totaling over 3000 with about 2000 being school children.1SG Pinter hopes to beat that record this year with new performances to include two performances at the Korean Memorial on the Atlantic City boardwalk on Saturday May 26th.

Adults and children attending these performances will learn the following. The true meaning of Memorial Day, proper respect for our military and the uniform, proper customs of patriotism, what our flag represents, what a 21 Gun Salute means, when military appreciation month is, when our nation is to pause for a moment of silence, what your civilian salute to our nation is, what a blue star banner is, and what a gold star banner is. 1SG Pinter’s teaching is concluded by explaining the history of the Bugle and the history of “TAPS” prior to sounding this final honor from our nation. These are important things that are not taught in our schools or anywhere else today.

You are invited to come to all public performances. Please bring your friends and don’t forget to bring the children. This is a time for us to pause and show respect for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and to honor their families.  Veterans and troops currently serving will be honored for preserving our FREE WAY OF LIFE.  See schedule below.
