PRINCETON: Area evacuated after gas leak

   A gas leak caused by construction work on Charlton Street caused an evacuation of businesses and residents in the area of William, Charlton and Nassau Streets for a short time Monday afternoon.
   A worker who was digging in the area struck a gas line, which caused the leak, according to police. The leak was detected by a police officer in the area about 1:13 p.m.
   Princeton Fire Department and PSE&G responded to the scene.
   The Fire Department ordered an evacuation of buildings within a half block vicinity of the leak.
   Princeton University Department of Public Safety assisted with evacuations of buildings in the vicinity owned by Princeton University while the Princeton Borough Police Department evacuated all other residences and buildings within the evacuation zone, according to Capt. Nicholas Sutter of the Borough Police department.
   Charlton and William streets were closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the incident.
   PSE&G stopped the leak around 2 p.m. and all residents were allowed to return to their buildings and residences at that time.
   There were no injuries reported.
