Mr. Berendt, 78, of Manalapan, died March 29, 2012, at home. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He then served in the Army National Guard. Mr. Berendt was employed as a truck driver for Hess, Chevron, and Gulf Oil Company before his retirement. He was predeceased by two children, Bert Charles Berendt and Bonnie Lee Berendt. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Sarah Young Berendt; a daughter, Linda Kelich, of Jackson; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Eleanor Berendt; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan.
