LAWRENCE: Fire truck and car collide

By Lea Kahn, Staff Writer
A fire engine that was responding to a call at the Lawrence Square Village townhouse development off Quakerbridge Road was damaged when it was involved in a collision with a car at the intersection of Brunswick Pike and Bakers Basin Road on Sunday, April 8.
The fire engine, which was driven by Slackwood Fire Co. volunteer Kenneth Johnson, 59,was traveling north on Brunswick Pike with its lights and siren on when it struck a 2001 Ford Mustang driven by Shadi Taha, 21, of Hamilton Township.
Ms. Taha was traveling west on Bakers Basin Road and was attempting to turn left onto Brunswick Pike, southbound, when the accident occurred at 6:36 p.m. The fire engine struck the rear driver’s side of the Mustang. The fire engine’s front bumper was damaged.
Neither driver was injured. No summonses had been issued to either driver as of Wednesday morning.
Slackwood Fire Co. volunteers Tim Megargle, 60, and Brandon Peterson, 19, who were riding on the fire engine, were not injured.
The fire, which was reported on Poillon Court in the Lawrence Square Village development, was apparently caused by a discarded cigarette that landed in a landscaping bed.
It melted some of the vinyl siding on the building, but was stopped by additional firefighters and did not spread.
