April is the 16th annual National Poetry Month. The Manville library will celebrate the month, which is sponsored in part by Poetry Magazine and the Academy of American Poets.
A workshop will be held in the Community Room on Tuesday, April 17, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for children up to age 14.
The library is holding a poetry contest. Please write poems in these forms: sonnet form, 14 lines; lyric form, 15-25 lines; haiku form, 17 syllables, and quatrain form, four lines.
Deadline is Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
An open poetry reading will be on Tuesday, April 17, from 6:30-8 p.m.
All winners will receive T-shirts and some poetry books. Some poems may appear in the Manville News.
April concert: On Tuesday, April 24, 7-8:30 p.m., the Dr. Karen Zumbrunn Jazz Trio will present a free concert. The public is invited. Light refreshments will be served.
This program is made possible, in part, by funds from the N.J. State Council on the Arts and is administered by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission through the state, county partnership local program.
Art exhibit: The library will host an art exhibit of Romanian-born artist Cristian Ostafi of Holmdel. “The Mime” is a collection of 31 black-and-white photos of mimes that symbolize a man under a totalitarian regime. The runs through April in the Community Room.
Art Society works: Fascinating and incredible masterpieces by Manville high and intermediate school students will be on display at the library until Friday, April 6. The public is welcome.
Tax help for seniors: AARP volunteers will be available to prepare senior citizens’ income tax forms for free at the library by appointment only until April 12. The library will only provide the Community Room and the Quiet Room. The hours are noon to 5 p.m. Make appointments by calling 908-541-5710.
Display case: On display for the month of April is a superb collection of dolls by Gale Skirkanish.
If you have a hobby or collection that you would like to exhibit in the display case at the entrance to the library, call Barbara Forbes at 908-722-9722.
Chess class: The free class, which is open to all ages, will meet in the Quiet Room on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8. All are welcome.
Hungry Readers Book Club: The club meets from noon to 1p.m. on the second Monday of each month. The next meeting will be held May 14. For information, call Beverly Ball at 908-722-3057.
Gifts for the library: If you have new books, DVDs and CDs that you no longer need, consider donating them to the library. In addition, IRS tax-deductible monetary contributions are accepted. Due to budget cuts, donations are needed and appreciated. In advance, the library thanks everyone for their generosity.
Books for sale: The library has ongoing book sale of a variety of children’s, juvenile non-fiction, biography, fiction, non-fiction, mystery, science fiction and more. Hardcover books sell for 50 cents, softcover 25 cents or by the bag for $2. VHS tapes are three for $1.
Crochet and Knitting Club Too: The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 25, from 6:15-8 p.m. in the Community Room. Bring your yarn and needles and join us. All are welcome, whether you are a novice or experienced.
Cost of copies: Due to the cost of ink cartridges, the library Board of Trustees has raised the price of copies. Black-and-white copies are 25 cents each. Color copies are 50 cents.
