SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Crash closes road

By Charles W. Kim, Managing Editor
Fresh Ponds Road had to be closed for more than four hours Tuesday following an accident where a truck knocked down a utility pole and overturned, police said.
Sgt. James Ryan said the unidentified driver of the truck was taken to Robert Wood University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was treated and released with only minor injuries.
According to Sgt. Ryan, the accident took place Tuesday afternoon as the truck was traveling north on Fresh Ponds Road.
The driver, Sgt. Ryan said, swerved to avoid a green Pontiac that was traveling in the opposite direction and crossed over the double yellow line into the northbound lane.
The truck struck a utility pole and overturned.
The Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad and township EMS personnel responded to the scene to assist in the rescue, according to police.
Workers from Public Service Electric and Gas were also called to repair the pole knocked down in the accident.
Sgt. Ryan said the road was closed to traffic for more than four hours while the utility workers replaced the pole and restored power to the area.
The accident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call police at 732-329-4646.
